It was a slow summer...

Well it was a slow summer for me in the fishing department. Since the posts you saw over Memorial Day, I only got on the water three total times. Once on a trip to Beaver Island for carp (I know, I owe you a write up), once on a smallmouth float on the James River, and once a couple weekends ago on the C&O Canal.

The canal wasn't much to write about. I hooked a couple fish, but broke them both off trying to land them. The space canal between 7 and 8 was almost completely empty of water. Between 6 and 7 was fish-able, but low and dirty. I would rate the area as "fish somewhere else" based on what I saw. Plus, with the de-watering of the canal coming up soon, it's probably only going to get worse.

That being said, I did see two monstrous grass carp in the main stem of the Potomac. It was a little surprising to see them there since they aren't native (and generally can't reproduce around here) and I hadn't ever heard of a stocking program in the past. Regardless, I couldn't even get them to glance at my flies.

Hopefully soon I should have some video for you from the past few months...

  1. I just found your blog. I'm just getting in to carp fishing, and visit Georgetown a couple of times a year, so I'll be following your progress keenly. I hope to hit the canal once it's wet.

  2. Thanks for checking it out! Unfortunately, the water will be drained from the entire Georgetown stretch for over a year due to repairs they're doing to the locks so they can float that tourist boat again. If I understand the work correctly, it should be wet at the next lock above Fletchers. I'll have to try to find a new place for mulberry fishing, since I'm not aware of any trees that will be in the

  3. I'm going to be in Georgetown next week for a few days. I presume it's not worth bringing my gear yet - too early in the season for the Potomac too I presume?

  4. If you can find somewhere on the canal with water, you'll likely find active fish. I don't know any good spots to fly fish from the shore on the main stem of the Potomac in the Georgetown area. The area I usually check out is by Lock 8. That will be too dangerous to wade with the current flows.

  5. Brilliant info - I'll bring my packaway gear and wander. Cheers Jeffrey.

  6. Hey I don't know about anyone else, but I still check your blog every little while just in case the canal is open again. I had a few casts around the mouth of Rock Creek last time I was there but it was raining and I lost enthusiasm. Once the canal is rewatered I'll know to bring my packaway fly rod when the wife has another conference.
